Just had a great chat with Marty. Honestly, there isn't a better person in this sport than Marty Biron. He has always had great luck in the Coliseum he told me, and he is very excited about the way the Islanders are heading and to be a part of the team moving forward.

There is much I have always liked about Marty's game.

The main thing is definitely his ability to raise his level of play. A great example was the way he singlehandedly beat the eventual Cup champs in Pittsburgh in the possible elimination Game 5 in Pitt. He was stellar in period 1 and actually shut out the Pens, bringing the series back to a Game 6 in Philly.

The other quality is what he brings to a dressing room. He is a calming force who can really make a team laugh. He also has a fantastic perspective on life. His arrival in Philly during the dreadful final Forsberg year was such a breath of fresh air, and his play in leading what was a last place overall team to the Conference Finals the next season had as much to do with his off-ice performance as his on-ice game...Which was outstanding if you remember...I know Canadiens fans do. It was Biron alone that put the Flyers into the Conference Finals in that series against the Habs.

The Flyers took a chance here and tried to save some money with the loss of Biron and Nitty. The Flyers loved Biron. I can tell you that from many discussions with people from the top of the organization on down. They just ran out of money and decided to take a shot with Emery.

However, with one-year deals all around, next summer...well, anything could be reversed.

This one year deal Biron signed is a steal for the Islanders given the uncertainty of Dipietro's circumstance. I expect Biron to compete quite well with Roloson. Both goalies are outstanding people and will keep the Isles in a lot more games this season than in the past.

more to come....
