Geez...I would be shocked...
Talking to sources for the last hour...The NY Post article may have jumped the gun a bit..
This may be as simple as the Devils needing to make a trade. Even though they can go over the cap between now and the beginning of the season, they can only go over the cap by 10%... essentially 6 million over. If the deal is as reported goes through that would put the Devils 7 over and the NHL wouldn't allow it. The issue now would be Lou's trade for Arnott...My bet is this is what's happening.
Then there is Lou Lamoriello...He has been known to actually nix deals if they leak out. Smaller deals, but still, Lou is a wild card. But don't blame Mark Everson here. I feel his sources were very solid. Remember, Lou will need to make trades and he certainly has less leverage making them AFTER Kovalchuk has signed and everyone knows he needs to clear space.
I still think Kovalchuk signs in NJ...
However....Wild speculation and rumors abound in the last hour...
*I am hearing the Rangers are in this.
*The Devils are trying to make a major trade with St. Louis.
*The Kings could get back in.
*Another source says the Leafs came in...
*Even rumors of the Thrashers...
One thing for sure: The Kings ownership is getting ripped now on the inside of the NHL. A different team's owner said of the Kings and Kovalchuk, "Should have been the easiest deal to close this off-season."
I asked one person just now if he heard, "what do you think is happening?"
My source replied, "Not a clue, insanity."
Wild times...and a bad day to be at the beach with the family.
It could all get fixed soon...Lou's not happy though. That is the only definite.
btw...look for the Lightning to sign Brett Clark.
