Hockeybuzz.com is honoured to have Jessie Pegula, daughter of new Sabres owner, Terry Pegula, as a guest blogger.

Jessie watched the Sabres vs. Pens game, and she offers this assessment of the game.

We look forward to featuring Jessie's takes on the Sabres and the NHL in the second half of the NHL season.

Thanks, Jessie!

I guess there are three periods for a reason. Buffalo came out on fire with Paul Gaustad and Michael Grier scoring early and jumping on Pittsburgh really quick. Going into the 2nd with a 3-goal lead, you would think they would be confident to quickly try and really up the lead. Didn’t happen this time. Buffalo had 3 penalties to start off the 2nd period with a total of 7…yes, SEVEN penalties the entire game. I mean they were mostly roughing penalties too, stuff that isn’t really necessary. It can be avoided.  How do you expect to win a game when you are in the box the whole time? Can’t be done. Pittsburgh came out with 17 shots on goal and 3 goals in the 2nd.
Now in the third period Buffalo led with 13 shots on goal but still led by one. Fleury stood on his head a little bit at the end but that’s the kind of fire Buffalo needs to have more often! I mean you just can’t have this 6 shots on goal the entire 2nd period. You can’t expect Miller to be able to handle all that. Which by the way, I though Miller had a pretty good game. Dustin Jeffrey’s goal on him early was a little bit of a fluke. I don’t even know how it went in.
Mike Grier had a good game, a goal and finishing +2. Tyler Ennis showed you what he can do in the end of the 3rd period and Paul Gaustad had a goal, an assist, and was +2. All in all, good effort, balance it out and give Pittsburgh some credit. They aren’t exactly chopped liver either; they are fighting for a President’s Trophy without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin who was injured again during the game. Would a point be nice? Yes. So would a win, a playoff spot, and the Stanley Cup…
Now for that playoff spot, Florida won tonight putting them one point ahead of Buffalo with 52 points. Here are the teams looking for that 8th spot.

-Atlanta Thrashers 57pts

-Carolina Hurricanes 56pts

-Florida Panthers 52pts

-Buffalo Sabres 51pts

Do I think Buffalo can make the playoffs? Yes. Absolutely. There are plenty of games left. Is it going to be easy? Hell no. Either way, I think they can do it because they showed it during the 1st and 3rd periods. Work on not letting that mental lapse come in. To me that is the HUGE difference between the top teams and the bottom ones. They aren’t as messy. Plus Buffalo just came off the NHL All-Star break, probably a little slow while Pittsburgh has been on fire proving they can win without their stars.
Tomorrow they take on Toronto at home. Shouldn’t be a threat at all. Let’s go Buffalo!
