Every year veteran NHL players who don't get signed to UFA contracts accept tryouts with NHL clubs and every year a few players prove the GMs can make mistakes when handing out money in the summer.

As we sit here this morning there are a still two notable players who have yet to accept an invite to camp. Both Brian McCabe and Sergei Samsonov have had a few invites each but also feel they could still sign a contract so they are debating what to do.

#5 Steve Begin, Vancouver Canucks.

Steve has played in close to 500 NHL games and has managed 100 points, but his real asset is his ability to annoy opponents. The Canucks need to get more grit and they are obviously aware of this. Begin could be that guy. The Canucks also invited Todd Fedoruk to camp to fill this role, so you get the idea they are well aware of this.

#4 David Aebischer, Winnipeg Jets.

Aebischer is a good example of a player who could make the NHL through his Jets tryout, but not make the Jets. He played a year in Switzerland and could be the perfect backup for the right NHL team if he still has it. Making Winnipeg could be tough though.

#3. Michael Nylander, Flyers.

Another player who could make it if the Flyers were to suffer injuries, otherwise I expect Nylander to play somewhere in the NHL this season...but likely not Philly...despite being close with Jagr, the Flyers are too deep up the middle.

#2. Owen Nolan, Vancouver

Here is the player the Canucks need to sign. He brings leadership and more to an already dangerous team.

#1. Ryan Johnson, Detroit Red Wings.

Ryan has plenty of game left and is the kind of player teams love to add to their dressing room. The Red Wings are a great fit for Johnson as well. I would be very surprised if Ryan were to not make this team as other teams had discussed outright signing him as a UFA.

more to come...have a great day with your family!
