But can you actually move Evgeni Malkin? Of course you can move him, but can you get fair value and is there even fair value to be had?
I am not convinced.
I will say that I believe Malkin will never become the player he could be as long as he's a Penguin. He needs to be "the man." Malkin grew up in the country where there is much emphasis on being a first line center. Something he will never be in Pittsburgh. I am sure it is something he wants to be, and honestly deserves to be.
The Penguins would need to get a lot back. And that is an understatement. This would have to be an Eric Lindros type trade, and in the year 2015 that's a really hard thing to pull off. The Penguins' real problem has been their inability to draft and develop young talent. It is killing them right now, and it is the entire reason that such a move is even being slightly suggested.
And yet still I wouldn't do it. I do believe you can build a team by really doing your homework and picking up some key players. But it takes a change in scouting and several years to pull off.
I have asked some sources whether they thought it was possible? These are sources with direct connections to the situation. They said there is no way the Penguins would ever do it, and they believe reports by some mainstream journalists are simply educated guesses.
