As I reported in the first paragraph of yesterday's story Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock is now allowed to talk to other teams, and minutes ago Bob McKenzie, via twitter, confirmed and added the window would stay open until the end of May. McKenzie also agreed that just because Babcock is allowed to talk to other teams it doesn't mean it's automatic that he is leaving Detroit.
"DET has granted Mike Babcock permission to talk to other NHL teams. Window open til late May. Doesn't mean Babcock leaving DET, window open," McKenzie tweeted adding, "That window begins at noon today."
So who is interested? The short answer is MANY teams, but the reality is a little different.
The Red Wings would get a third-round pick if the team signs him.
Let's start by looking at what Babcock wants. I am told Babcock feels a great deal of responsibility to much the bar forward for coaches salary and not to be shocked if Babcock draws five-year deal in the range of $38 million. That's an enormous number, but not his only demand.
Babcock also wants say in player personnel, but my sources are telling me that doesn't positively mean he needs to be handed the GM spot.
One source noted, "The whole structure of the way business is done is changing. We are seeing many teams with GMs who are cap guys and team presidents who are running the show."
So could Babcock be the first coach/team president?
"Yes," my source confirmed. "Or he could be handed a player ops spot or associate GM, or some other role. I don't sense he wants to be drawing up contracts.."
So does that mean Babcock as Coach/Team President could be the first coach who could technically fire the GM?
It's definitely unique.
Teams include the Sabres, Flyers, Leafs (yes they are talking to him), the Islanders, the Oilers, the Bruins and the Sharks. I have also heard Phoenix mentioned too. Also, although its not official, it is hard to imagine the Penguins won't covertly talk to Mike.
