When Losing is Winning

OMG!! Could this day get any stranger? Actually, for Islanders fans, this entire week is weird for fans who are so used to virtual main stream media blackouts. Now we are the media darlings of the hockey world. So, your prize for coming in dead last is to be the FIRST thing the entire league talks about the week before the draft.

I’m 100% certain that this is NOT the way Garth Snow wanted to make sports headlines. While it’s good “to be in the driver’s seat” and not have to “look in the rear view mirror” as Garth said on Monday’s Leaf’s Lunch, the pressure is staggering.

Even a contingent of Islanders Bloggers big and small has been pressed into questioning for the amusement of the entire hockey world.

“Who do you think Garth will select? Who do you WANT Garth to select? What do you think the fan reaction will be if he DOESN’T select who they want? Will you still be a fan if he doesn’t select John Tavares? Are you going to eat that brownie?”

Okay then! As everyone and their blogging mother (that would be me) has been poked, prodded and intimidated into answering the questions at hand, let me tell you what I told David Cosillo from Newsday today.

David showed up at my office at 1:30 pm after having made numerous blogger stops and rushing to meet a deadline. I wondered how his eyes didn’t glaze over by asking the same questions and possibly getting the same answers over and over again.

My appointment was immediately after Point Blank’s own Chris Botta’s and just prior to LetThereBeLighthouse’s Nick Giglia’s. I’m certain I was the only one he interviewed today wearing Islanders logo earrings and having a world class “bad hair day.”

I’ll make this short. Hedman. I’d be perfectly content should Garth Snow select Victor Hedman. Yes, I am in the minority, but I usually am. I would love to see this 6’6” 220lb young man skate on the Uniondale ice. I understand that John Tavares will score goals, but in my opinion, our defense is thin and easily devastated by injury.

I will accept any of the top three as a choice to wear an Islanders sweater. What I don’t think I will accept is another “Okay, I traded down to the Burkie’s 7th spot and proclaim Ethan Werek a NY Islander.” Not that I have any clue as to whether or not Center Ethan is a good player as he is currently ranked 32 in the draft order. The point is we didn’t know anything about Josh Bailey last year. So when they said his name there was a collective “WTF??” in the Coliseum. If the name that spills forth from the Jumbotron on Friday is anything other than Tavares, Hedman or Duchene, I will personally have a huge problem.

So check the Newsday site, (http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/islanders/ny-spisles2512915130jun24,0,2877956.story/), for the video on the sidebar just so you can giggle like crazy and then just prepare yourselves for Friday.

As I said on Twitter, prepare for the worst and you won’t be disappointed. But as Islanders fans we have a tendency to complain no matter WHAT happens!

Note: I'm just too tired to make that freakin' link work. I'll try tomorrow.
