The Coaching Conundrum

Rumor has it Brent Thompson has one of the vacant Isles assistant coaching jobs. If that is the case, I’m not exactly in agreement.

With nothing much else to discuss in Islanders Country at this particular moment, the story of who is right about Thompson seems to be all we’ve got.

Lighthousehockey did an excellent piece on the “is it done-isn’t-it?” situation http://www.lighthousehockey.com/2012/6/7/3069900/brent-thompson-new-york-islanders-coach-bridgeport So read that and I won’t have to just rehash things.

Done? Okay. Now while Thompson has figured to be a very good AHL coach bringing the Sound Tigers to the playoffs (and losing in the first round again), I’m not sure they should move him. He is successful where he is and growing as a coach.

When Thompson was tagged for the ST job, Garth Snow had this to say about him.
“Brent’s background as a player and his recent success as the head coach of the Alaska Aces makes him the perfect fit to show our young prospects what it takes to play at the NHL level.”

This from the AHL.com website when at the time:
Thompson entered the coaching ranks following a 15-year playing career, which concluded in 2005 with the Providence Bruins of the AHL. During his 15-year career, the 6’2” 210-pound defenseman appeared in over 900 professional games including 121 NHL contests. Thompson was originally a second round (39th overall) selection of the Los Angeles Kings in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft.

So is “assistant” NHL coach better than AHL head coach? I’m sure the cash is better and the travel is far less taxing. But what’s the real reason for this?

Is Brent an insurance policy on the bench should Jack Capuano fail dismally by December? Is this a way to move Doug Weight to Bridgeport?

What? What’s the deal? Islanders Coaching Carousel.

SideNote: So Town of Hempstead’s Kate Murray had some sort press conference yesterday and Newsday’s Patrick Whittle was there tweeting his fingers off for Isles fans. Murray talked about investors looking into the Coliseum property.

The developers expressed that the zoning options were "a highly unusual, happy thing," said Murray. #Isles

It’s a “happy thing”? What like Sesame Street happy? Kate Murray doesn’t care that she is vilified by Islander fans and I personally think she speaks out of both sides of her mouth. She said what ultimately happens on the property is up to the County, yet it’s the TOH that gets to approve plans.

Will this never end???
