Tavares Gets A Boot

And a really ugly jersey.

It was 12:34 when the gloomy news came over my phone. A Tweet from @KatieStrangNYI about the health of our rising star, John Tavares. “#isles rookie John Tavares suffered a fractured foot at Worlds.”

AHHHHH… Garth Snow’s worst nightmare had come true. How many times did I say “JT: just don’t get hurt!” while he was in Germany? More times than I’d like to count. So the news was a little disconcerting in 140 characters of less.

But the truth is that JT didn’t even realize what he had done, played two more games on it and didn’t pay much attention. (Yep. That’s a hockey player.) He worked on his golf game and when it was still bothering him a little the Islanders asked him to have it checked out. MRI revealed a stress fracture. It should take about 2 - 4 weeks to heal (if all goes well) and John is currently sporting a walking boot.

Now the UGLY jersey part comes in here: Tavares, Shenn, Stamkos and Spezza all gathered in Toronto to unveil a new Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream flavor that will help fund the NHLPA’s Goals & Dreams Foundation; Caramel Hat Trick.

While this is really a wonderful partnership of Ben & Jerry’s and the NHLPA, I’m a little perturbed because the presentation said the proceeds will fund children’s hockey initiatives “in THIS country.” This country? As in CANADA perhaps? What? Us chubby wubbies in the US don’t eat ICE CREAM?

First KRAFT HockeyVille now our own Ben & Jerry’s is deserting us. (No pun intended.) Ben & Jerry’s came from Vermont and I checked their website and there is no mention of being able to get Caramel Hat Trick here in the US. Boo hiss!!

Other Islander news that I didn’t pay too much attention to: Also according to Katie Strang’s Twitter feed “the Isles have extended offers to Anders Nilsson and Casey Cizikas to retain their rights”

Well okay then. Nilsson is said to be thinking about it and Casey Cizikas is the kid who spent way too much time in the news for all the wrong reasons right before he was drafted. I tend to agree with those wondering why they would extend an offer to Nilsson when they already have a 6’5” goalie in Mikko Koskinen. So I’m a little confused. They’re like giant bookends.

Cizikas will be finished with his one year probation sentence for the unfortunate Rugby accident in 2007. In 68 games with the St. Michaels Majors, he scored 25 goals and 37 assists for a total of 62 points. Casey, a 5’11” left handed Center has skills. But the question will always remain if he can put his past behind him.
