12:07 pm: Don't forget that voting is open now for the next round in the NHL13 cover. So get JT91 over the top!

As Islander fans we are used to being disappointed, as Americans, we are not. So when I first heard yesterday that Team Canada and our own John Tavares were knocked out of the IIHF WC quarterfinals I was shocked.

Team Slovkia scored with less than 3 minutes left while Getzlaf was in the box to break a 3-3 tie. To read Getzlaf's comments, it may seem the call was questionable or at least he had a good explanation. However, in a one-and-done type of tournament, these things happen.
"To lose in that fashion is not easy to swallow." he told reporters after the game. Nope. Not for Team Canada. You know, the people that own the game of hockey.

A few hours later, Scott Gordon and Team USA took on the host country's own team. Team Finland had done very well in the tournament but still seemed beatable. Team USA seemed to control the early part of the game, but two quick goals including the game winner by ex-NYI Jesse Joensuu sent the Americans home early.

Deflating to say the least. However, to listen to some of the post game interviews, were the American's victim of "phantom calls" that gave the host country their win? Two calls were mentioned as being a possibility, but could there have been more?

So no medal for our shining star John Tavares. None for favorite son Kyle Okposo and nothing else for us Isles fans to root for at the World Championships. We go home with nothing to show for it. Which is better than Nino Niederreiter who goes home with a high ankle sprain. Great.

So here we are back to watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs while our two dreaded rivals battle each other for a crack at the cup and the west coast games are on late enough for us to pass out before knowing who won. (Kings. it's always the Kings.)

It was nice of Henrik Lundqvist to "mention" the Islanders in an interview with Stan Fischler that I heard on XM Home Ice a few days ago. When asked how it was to battle against a team that they are so "familiar" with, the "king" said they were familiar with 'the other New York team' too. Hey, thanks for the post season mention.

I propose this Islander fans, from here on in, we are LA Kings fans. Our connection? Jonathan Quick, brother-in-law of our own Matt Moulson will have to be our connection to the cup.

GO KINGS GO!!!

It's going to be a very, very long hot summer.
