Germany, Binghamton or Anywhere: It's all about the Net

Rick DiPietro is playing on one of the worst teams in Germany. Many of you (not Isles fans) will say he should feel right at home. But the truth is even Martin Broduer and Roberto Luongo have been chased from their net at one point or another.

Rick lost in his debut game and then again, in overtime the next visit to the net. He was passed over for the third game, which I believe they still lost. Although I am not sure because I do not have German translators as they do over at allnyi.com.

Give the man credit for trying to get back on the horse. It’s been a very long time since he’s seen game action, and while many say this German league is comparable to the ECHL, it’s still game action and I’d like to give Rick a little more time before deeming him unfit for NHL service.

Meanwhile, back in the states, the Bridgeport SoundTigers won last night over the baby Penguins with Kevin Poulin (the future of the NYI) in net, 3-2 making 34 saves. This is the Bridgeport’s third win this month. I’m wondering if October is just as important in the AHL as it is in the NHL. I’m guessing it is.

This month is also very important for Nino Niederreiter who now has three goals in three games for Bridgeport. Not bad for a kid everyone worried about last season. Meanwhile, Travis Hamonic spent more time in the box. Is young Travis gaining too much of a bad reputation even in the AHL? Or is he just playing with such a sharp edge, it cuts both ways. The Hammer has three assists and 14 PIMs so far this season.

Also doing well for the Sound Tigers is “The Swedish Line” of Sundstrom, Ullstrom and Persson, although they need a cooler nick-name than that.

All in all, the Sound Tigers are kicking butt and taking names. Let’s get the euphoria in now while we can.

This success by the Sound Tigers makes me wish that Matt Martin had signed a two way contract. He’s be playing right now.

The next game on the docket for Bridgeport isn’t until Friday 10/26 against the Worcester Sharks. It will be their Monster Mash Halloween Party. The Sharks have lost all four of the games they have played so far this month. Of course, the law of averages says the Sound Tigers will lose this one then. Let’s hope not.

In other AHL news, Eric Hornick reported that Nathan Lawson blew a 5-0 lead for the Binghamton Senators who lost in Overtime after their starting goalie was ejected for fighting.

Meanwhile, the NHL and the NHLPA are continuing their PR campaigns and egocentric posturing. No end in sight to the dispute. Thank you gentlemen. If you believe you are trying to save the game, you’re doing one hell of a job.

Sideboard: The votes are in and 38% of you said the season would not start on 11/2 because the NHLPA would not give in to Gary Bettman. Congrats, you are all correct.
