Living on only a few hours of sleep with a sick spouse and two very needy huskies, there was no way I was going to find something to talk about this morinng related to last night's Flames blanking of the Isles "B" squad.

Well, never say never.

While reading the paper, eating breakfast, listening to the news AND going over my Twitter timeline I found this very surprising item posted by none other than the NHL official account.

It is a brief video of Trevor Gillies laying a hit on Derek Smith. Usually this type of thing would be followed with "who was ejected from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct." But it wasn't.

Actually, listen to ex-Islander (and one of my all-time favorite) Ray Ferraro explain the hit.

While it is only preseason, and there is nothing on the line here, it seems that what IS on the line is Trevor Gillies career and he's taking it very seriously.

The one person Gillies does NOT want to receive a phone call from is Brendan Shanahan. Seeing what sort of punishment he has been doling out to repeat offenders, any call from Shananhan would probably mean the end of Trevor Gillies NHL career.

Keep it up Trevor. I know you know how to play hockey. You know your role and you play it well. Just remember the rules, just as you did last night, and you just may have an awesome season.
