Wanna Hit The Cap Floor? Go Get Jeff Carter

While a pipe dream, it would make sense that Florida get involved in the Jeff Carter situation. It's well-chronicled that Philly's cap situation is tumultuous. Additionally, the Flyers are in need of defensive help, as well as picks for the future. The Panthers have all of that, plus plenty of room to absorb such a contract.

Carter's full no-trade clause from 2012-2015 is perfect timing for the Panthers, as that is when their bevy of new draft picks should be ready for the NHL. Keeping/trading Carter at the end of this window would be relative to his success/production.

For a team that is in a true rebuilding mode, but with lots of money to spend for a quick facelift, a player like Carter could be the face of the franchise while Gudbranson, Howden, Bjugstad, and other draft picks continue to mature.

Many were surprised at how high the salary cap and floor went up this year. With the Panthers roughly needing to spend $30 million just to hit the floor, there is room for that one (maybe two) bonafide star(s) that can rejuvenate the offense that has been floundering for a decade. Add a potential Nugent-Hopkins, Huberdeau, or Landeskog to the mix this year or next, combined with Markstrom's arrival, and suddenly the Panthers could make formidable playoff runs.

I know most of you will think I'm crazy for insinuating that this deal could happen with Columbus continuing to be the team rumored in play for Carter's services. However, what Philly needs to do to get financially sound and what the Panthers have to give does indeed line up. The Panthers have lots of picks and solid defensive prospects as well.

Regardless of what does or doesn't happen, it's going to be a great week in the NHL. Unfortunately the Panthers past futility has brought them to this point where they can finally overhaul the product for good instead of mediocrity.

If Carter doesn't come to fruition that will not be the end of the world. However, it sure would help open people's eyes that the Panthers are on the way back. Heck I bet Tallon is probably working on that monster offer sheet for Stamkos as well.

Thanks for reading, and your comments are appreciated.
