The Islanders punched their ticket to the playoffs in dramatic fashion last night, coming from behind to defeat the Washington Capitals 4-3 in Overtime. The Isles fell behind by two goals early in the third but found another gear and tied the score to force OT. Thomas Hickey then buried a pretty pass from John Tavares to propel the Islanders into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Christopher Gibson made some key saves to record his first NHL win. If you told me in the preseason that the Isles would be down to their fourth goalie I would be researching the draft lottery but the contributions from all the kids from the AHL cannot be over looked.

I also have to give credit to Islanders Head Coach Jack Capuano who has got the response from his team that he was looking for. Well, everyone besides Josh Bailey who was minus 3 last night and looks lost. However the rest of the roster appears to have “picked their sh*t up” and perhaps that will be the battle cry of the playoffs. In fact those would be great tee-shirts.

The top line is working and John Tavares has looked like the player we remember in recent history. Let’s hope the no show against the Penguins was the kick in the butt that they needed because you have to be encouraged at the team’s response to that.

Next up is a matchup against the Rangers tomorrow night. I have talked at length that the Islanders would be best served staying where they are in the standings and taking their chances with the Florida Panthers and the Atlantic Division. It appears that that is exactly what the Panthers owners want too after Doug Cifu said on Sirius XM that he would rather play the Isles than the Rangers.

On the podcast today is New York Rookie dman Adam Pelech. We recorded from Sound Tigers practice and had the chance to spend a few minutes with the young blue liner. We talked about the injury and what his recovery has been liked. We also touch on his development into an NHL player and what his time with the Sound Tigers has taught him. Enjoy!
