Stars Lose Eakin in Expansion Draft

The Vegas Knights claimed versatile Dallas Stars center Cody Eakin in the NHL Expansion Draft on Wednesday. While Eakin was a viable possibility for selection all along, the Stars seemed more vulnerable to losing either one of young defensemen Jamie Oleksiak or Patrik Nemeth or perhaps veteran Dan Hamhuis to Vegas' defense-happy collection of acquisitions.

Eakin is a player who can play either a more offense-oriented role or tackle defensive responsibilities as asked. While not irreplaceable to the Stars, he was a player who seemed to be a good fit for incoming head coach Ken Hitchcock.

Roster moves are likely forthcoming over NHL Entry Draft weekend and into the start of free agency. At or near the top of the list is the need to unload either Antti Niemi or Kari Lehtonen to rid the team of its current logjam of having three NHL roster goaltenders with big contracts.
