1) Here's a tough trivia question: Which six players (three forwards, two defensemen and goaltender) took the first shift of the Flyers' first-ever regular season game; a 5-1 loss to the California Seals on October 11, 1967? The answer is at the end of this blog section.
2) Wayne Gretzky was recently on NHL Network,
sharing a story of how he became an LA King in 1988 after it had become clear that financially strapped Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington was seeking to trade the sport's greatest superstar. According to Gretzky, who had a no-trade clause in his contract, the player narrowed the field of other teams down to the Kings, Detroit Red Wings and the Flyers before deciding on Los Angeles. Now if that isn't a fascinating historic "what if" scenario for Flyers' fans in the dog days of summer, I don't know what it.
3) Today in Flyers History: August 11
1980: In a cash transaction with no players or draft picks exchanged, the Flyers sell the contract of John Paddock to the Quebec Nordiques.
2009: The Flyers sign Zac Rinaldo to an entry-level contract. On the same day, the Flyers also sign Danny Syvret, David Sloane and Nicola Riopel.
Birthday: Ken "the Rat" Linseman (1958).
Trivia answer: Forwards Brit Selby (LW), team captain Lou Angotti (center) and Wayne Hicks (RW), defensemen Jean Gauthier and John Miszuk and future Hall of Fame goaltender Bernie Parent were the six Flyers on the ice for the first shift of the Flyers' first-ever regular season game.
