QUICK HITS: AUGUST 2, 2017

1) Flyers goaltending prospect Carter Hart was flawless in his first outing at the 2017 World Junior Summer Showcase. He turned aside all 19 shots he faced, including a Sean Dhooghe breakaway, in 34:24 of action, before giving way to Michael DiPietro (11 saves on 12 shots). Team Canada White defeated Team USA Blue by a 2-1 score.

Team Canada White's Jordan Kyrou broke a scoreless deadlock at 8:44 of the second period. The narrow lead held through the goalie switch and the second intermission before USA Blue's Tim Gettinger knotted the game at 1-1 at 3:04 of the third period. The game remained tied until Robert Thomas put the Canadian side ahead to stay at 10:03 of the final stanza. DiPietro was credited as the winning goaltender, while Joseph Woll (27 saves on 29 shots) absorbed the loss.

In other WJSS action on Tuesday, Team USA White exploded for five goals in the first period on the way to crushing Team Canada Red by an 8-2 count. Casey Mittelstadt led the way with four points (two goals, two assists) for USA White.

Today, a combined Team Canada squad will take on Finland at 1 p.m. EDT while a combined Team USA opposes Sweden at 4 p.m. EDT. The games will air on NHL Network.

2) Flyers Alumni birthdays -- August 2: The late Rick "Jumbo" Lapointe was born on this day in 1955, while forward Mike Peluso was born in 1974.

3) Over on Broad Street Hockey, there's a fun little offseason retro article looking back at and rating Eric Lindros' TV commercials during the 1990s. The Ellio's Pizza ad with Mark Recchi, Pelle Eklund and Bob Clarke was his first that ran widely.

There is at least one missing: a 1995-96 season Legion of Doom line ad for premium seating at the new CoreStates Center (now Wells Fargo Center). It starts with "play-by-play" commentary with Gene Hart announcing yet another LOD goal and the trio returning to the bench after their shift. The linemates go on and on about how terrific the suites will be at the new arena. Mikael Renberg then chips in something along the lines of "Jag hör de säljer bra." ("I hear they're selling well"), although why he'd be talking in Swedish to LeClair and Lindros about premium seating sales is forever lost to history.
