FLYERS ROOKIES BLANK ISLES ROOKIES, 4-0

Flyers goaltending prospects Alex Lyon and Carter Hart combined for a 28-save shutout and Tyrell Goulbourne posted a Gordie Howe Hat Trick as the team pulled away from the New York Islanders prospects over the final 23 minutes of the game to earn a 4-0 victory in the Rookies Game at the Northwell Health Ice Center in Long Island.

After the game remained scoreless late into the second period, Anthony Salintri put the Flyers rookies ahead on a setup from 2015 first-round pick Travis Konecny. In the third period, goals by Steve Swavely, Goulbourne (shorthanded) and Carsen Twarynski (shorthanded) turned the game into a rout.

“To me what stood out was that the team settled in and got better and more sound in all areas of the game in each period throughout the game. That’s what you want to see," said Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol, who was not behind the bench for the game but was on hand with general manager Ron Hextall and other Flyers' hockey operations staff.

The Flyers Rookies got in some early penalty trouble but worked through it and went on to outshoot the Islanders Rookies by a 29-16 count over the final 40 minutes. The Flyers Rookies switched goaltenders at 10:44 of the second period, with Hart replacing starter Lyon.

Goulbourne, who assisted on the Swavely goal before scoring shorthanded, fought and defeated left winger Cristiano DiGiacinto to finish off a Gordie Howe Hat Trick. Radel Fazleev earned the lone assist on the Goulbourne shorthander.

Flyers rookie camp wraps up on Thursday. The rookies will stay on the for the start of the main training camp on Friday, with players taking the ice at 9:45 a.m. ET at the Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ.

FLYERS WORLD CUP UPDATES

1) Shayne Gostisbehere enjoyed an excellent game for Team North America in a thrilling 4-3 overtime win against Team Sweden on Wednesday. "Ghost" assisted on three goals for the young squad, which won a scintillating overtime when Henrik Lundqvist missed a pokecheck attempt on Nathan MacKinnon and the young Colorado Avalanche star seized an opportunity to move left and score on the backhand. Flyers center Sean Couturier skated 10:18 of ice time. In order to advance to the next round, Team North America now needs for winless Finland to defeat Russia by any means (regulation, overtime or shootout) on Friday. The Finland-Russia game is at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN. Even with the OT loss, Team Sweden wins its preliminary round bracket.

2) Claude Giroux played for the first time since the pre-tournament as Team Canada completed a round-robin sweep of its preliminary round bracket with a 4-1 win over Team Europe, featuring Mark Streit (17:25 TOI) and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (14:38 TOI, minus-two). Giroux played 15:50, recording one shot on goal and three credited hits. None of the Flyers' representatives recorded a point.

ALL-AMERICAN PROSPECTS GAME PREVIEW

The USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game takes place tonight at the Wells Fargo Center, with United States Hockey Hall of Famers John LeClair and Mark Howe coaching the respective teams. Local product Cayden Primeau, the son of former Flyers captain Keith Primeau and the nephew of former Flyers checking forward Derrick Smith, will see time on goal for Team LeClair.

Team Howe forward Kailer Yamamoto of the Spokane Chiefs (Western Hockey League) is one of the most intriguing prospects to watch in this game. Despite being severely undersized, he has a very high skill level and is coming off an outstanding Under-18 World Championships for Team USA (seven goals, 13 points in seven games) after he posted 71 points in 57 games to lead former Flyer Don Nachbaur's Chiefs in scoring last season.

Another player scouts in the building will keep a close eye upon is Team Howe forward Casey Mittelstadt. Committed to the University of Minnesota starting in 2017-18, the speedy and skilled forward will play USHL hockey for the Green Bay Gamblers to bookend his senior-year high school season in Eden Praire, Minnesota.
