The San Jose Sharks announced today that they’ve signed forward Filip Zadina to a one-year contract, worth $1.1 million.

Zadina was selected sixth overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 2018, but his tenure with the organization didn’t go quite as anticipated. Despite showing some promise early in his career throughout the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, Zadina really struggled to establish himself as an impact player in the NHL over the last few years. This past season, the winger got into just 30 games while battling injury trouble and registered only three goals and seven points in that time. He and the team recently agreed to a mutual contract termination as a result.

Still, it’s a worthwhile bet for the Sharks. Zadina obviously has a lot of upside, just hasn’t been able to put it all together. On a one-year deal, there’s no risk attached and Zadina is going to get a great opportunity, playing up with lineup with the Sharks.

One sign that could also point to Zadina possibly finding a bit more success is his low shooting percentage. For a player who scored 44 goals in 57 QMJHL games during his draft year, Zadina’s shooting percentage has been wildly low over the last few years. From 2020-21 to 2022-23, Zadina registered a shooting percentage of just 6.3 percent, which is unsustainably low.

The winger is another one of the Sharks’ notable signings so far this summer, which have also included Mackenzie Blackwood and Kyle Burroughs, among others. The team also traded for Anthony Duclair, then flipped 2019 second-round pick Artemi Kniazev to the Winnipeg Jets for defender Leon Gawanke.

A possible deal with the Vancouver Canucks revolving around Tyler Myers was also reported by Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, which could've seen Kevin Labanc heading the other way. Meanwhile, Erik Karlsson trade rumblings continue to be at the forefront of the team’s offseason.

Regardless, while the Sharks once again aren't likely to be overly competitive next season, it’s additions like the Zadina signing that could provide a lot of value for virtually no downside.
