The San Jose Sharks selected forward Will Smith with the fourth-overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Smith spent the year with the U.S. National Team Development Program, where he posted outstanding numbers. The center scored 51 goals and 127 points in 60 games and his selection didn’t come as much of a surprise.

It was pretty much assumed that after Connor Bedard, Columbus Blue Jackets would select whoever the Anaheim Ducks passed on between Adam Fantilli and Leo Carlsson. As a result, short of the Sharks selecting Matvei Michkov, Smith was always the likely pick.

Another fun moment was Patrick Marleau making the pick for the Sharks. Marleau recently joined the team’s front office as a player development coach and advisor.

With the pick, Smith arguably steps right into the title of the organization’s top prospect.

The Sharks also had another pick in the first round at 26th overall, as a result of the Timo Meier trade this season.

With the pick, the Sharks selected forward Quentin Musty from the Sudbury Wolves.

Musty was the first-overall pick in the 2021 OHL Draft and stands at 6-foot-2. This season, Musty put up great numbers in the OHL, scoring 26 goals and 78 points in 53 games.
