Avs name new GM

Well, it took seven weeks for the Avs have a new GM, but they finally have.

Greg Sherman, the Avs former assistant General Manager for the previous seven years, is the new GM. The way I understand it, his focus will be on the overall operations of the club while Craig Billington, the new assistant GM, will focus on the day-to-day operations. I don't really know how the two will work cohesively but time will tell (so long as it's not another seven freaking weeks) if it was a good move.

David Olver will be the director of Player Development, as well as being the General manager of the Lake Erie Monsters (that's basically the same thing right?). Brad Smith (is there a more generic name?) will take over as director of Player Personnel, managing the Avs' depth chart. Also, something that comes as no surprise whatsoever, the new director of Hockey Operations is none other than Eric Lacroix (raise your hand if you're excited...) Finally, Rick Pracey is the new Director of Amateur Scouting.

So in essence, the Avs really did, nothing except firing their entire coaching staff and Michel Goulet. They have dispersed power across different levels. It will take some work, getting all the limbs to strike out in the most efficient way, like the Octopus playing the drums.

I'm not sure what to think about this but I sure as hell hope it works. The Avs have a lot of work to do and not just this year. They need to clear cap and start the rebuild right. I'm very disconcerted that the hirings were "in house". If the house is damaged, you usually don't hire a person living in the house to fix it. For now though, it's wait and see.

I'd wager good money that the Avs promote Joe Sacco to at least an assistant Heach Coach, though, given the Avs front office hirings, I'd bet he'll be the head coach which I'd be fine with.
