Capitals go up 2-0 on Road

The Washington Capitals are up 2-0 in the Conference Finals, having won both games on the road.

Teams going up 2-0 in the finals, according to something I heard Nick Kypreos say on the broadcast yesterday, are 39-2 all-time. This would seemingly give the Capitals a 95% chance of winning, and that's not even taking into consideration that the Lightning lost both games at home.

One caveat is that the Capitals already came back down 2-0 against the Blue Jackets, and they lost both games at home to start as well. So anything can happen.

Additionally, the Lightning remain a vastly superior team - they aren't playing like it, but I just wouldn't count them out, is all I'm saying.

Last night's game was awesome. The Ovechkin one-timer goal was a thing of beauty and the Capitals again got a power-play in the last seconds of the period and scored before it was over. Something I don't think I saw all season happened in both games.

I think it's worth noting that despite how much of an underdog the Capitals are, they've not only won both games, but they've been the better team in both games.

Also, Backstrom has now missed three straight games and the Capitals have somehow managed to win all of them, despite the fact that he's one of their best players.

There was some kicking and some weird plays, but I'm kind of getting sick of everyone whining constantly about referees and suspensions. Refs make bad calls because as anyone who understands the difference between statistical analysis and the eye-test can tell you, things that happen in real time are hard to analyze on the spot.

I think all the video reply stuff has made it so that people expect perfection and I think it's kind of ruining the game. Refs miss calls. Some players are dirty. Get over it.

I was watching baseball this weekend, and it's even worse than hockey. On every close play, the teams run interference while they review the play and decide whether to challenge - they've taken a boring game and made it worse.

The quest for perfection is only serving to ruin the flow of games and I long for the days when the goal judge made the call.

Anyways, great series so far, the Capitals would be smart to remember how good the Lightning are and not get complacent.
