Chalk this up as things you don't expect to see even in speculation. John Tavares signing with the Pittsburgh Penguins. From Elliotte Friedman:

3. Nothing involving Lamoriello gets announced until he decides it does, but a move to the Islanders is the rumour that just won’t die. I do believe there have been talks and that it is a serious possibility. Assuming he does take over, that probably means a new pitch to keep John Tavares. The captain’s done a very good job of staying under the radar, keeping a lid on his future. Someone we do not expect is going to come out of nowhere to take a run at him. It’s purely a guess, but Penguins GM Jim Rutherford is the kind of guy I could see staying up at night figuring out how to do it.

Sooooooo, um yeah. My immediate reaction is the same as everybody else's. Wut.

Again, this is speculation, but I doubt it is blind speculation given the source. Personally, I have no idea how you fit another 10M contract on this team for a third line center even if you move out Kessel and Sheary because what would the point be if there weren't enough wingers to go around? Unless Tavares is going to take less or switch to wing this seems pretty outrageous. It still does even if he did do that.

Tavares has to leave the Islanders. He doesn't owe anything to anyone in that organization. He wasted his prime years already. I believe Tavares' best move would be to sign a one-year deal with the Maple Leafs for big money and take a run at a title and then sign the long term deal after the year. Even if he got hurt the offers would still flow in.

No matter where he goes it will be a very interesting saga to follow on the island.
