SKA with a victory in season opener to celebrate Kovalchuk's 300th game

The new Kontinental Hockey League season-opening game was played between the of the main favorites – SKA and CSKA Moscow. With victory going to the St.Petersburgh side.

Last season's champion SKA managed to get on penalty kill just 25 Seconds into the game, with Ilya Kovalchuk getting a penalty. Soon after it was time for SKA to have a man advantage as the season's first goal was scored by Patrick Hersley after an assist from Pavel Datsyuk. In the tenth minute, SKA doubled their lead after a goal by Nikolai Prohorkin.

At the beginning of the second period CSKA actively attacked and 25 minutes into the game it was a tie following a raid by Kirill Kaprizov, assisted Mikhail Grigorenko rocketing one home with his first goal since returning from the NHL.

CSKA came close to achieving a tie but in the 32nd minute, moments after a penalty kill they let another one in (1:3). It was Ilya Kovalchuk who scored a goal in his 300th game with SKA, giving Hersley an assist and 2nd point of the season.

Early in the third period, the opportunity to recover for Moscow turned into a three-goal deficit, while on powerplay SKA’s Sergey Shirokov's managed to beat Koskinen with a redirect. CSKA recovered quickly after the end of their powerplay it was 2:4, a smooth shot by Max Shalunov, Kaprizov and Girgorenko with assists.

Then CSKA had two more opportunities to play on the powerplay, but they remained unused and SKA took the victory with a result 4:2 celebrating their first victory this season. Moscow had impressive 30 shots on goal against Peterburgh’s 20 but it wasn’t enough to win the game as SKA’s goalie Mikko Koskinen stood tall to grant the victory.
