Hey it's the summer!

My kids are all like let's go the beach.......and I'm like can't you waste your life in front a screen like a normal kid? Anyways, we went to the beach.

What else is happening? I paid off a credit card in its entirety for the first time ever. I started re-reading Christine which contains passages I wouldn't have accepted from a first-year writing student back when I was teaching the old CW. It is truly Stephen King at his un-editable drug addled height, which makes it fascinating.......and it's not exactly horrible, but it is a weird book.

I also look forward to the Dark Tower movie. Saw the preview the other night and it looked awesome. I also watched the new Planet of the Apes movie and it was garbage. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. Where the ______ was James Franco? Did he get eaten in the last one? I don't know, but this movie blows on a level which makes the good reviews hard to understand.

On the music front, I keep playing Astral Weeks a lot and I am enjoying the new Broken Social Scene. I joked that they were the white person Wu Tang and it turns out that no one I was talking to knew who Broken Social Scene even was. I thought they were a famous band........and it made me miss the old Mono-Culture......when I grew up, there were at least 20 albums (Appetite, Aenema, RATM #1, Nevermind, Ten, Weezer #1 etc. ) that everyone knew.....and unless you knew someone really cool who could turn you on Modest Mouse or something, being limited to what you heard on the radio and found at the local record store meant that you could talk about virtually anything you liked to anyone and they would know it. Now all we have is super-famous (Taylor Swift) and no tiers, really. If it's not like Adele, you might as well speak another language.

Now everyone my age is stuck in the 90s while everyone else makes their 'own playlists' and it's good mostly, but we don't have any common songs.......and what's worse, only extremely boring lame musicians with wide ranging appeal can become Rock Stars in todays day and age.

Ed Sheeran? That guys is middle of the road and as unoffensive as they come. Marron 5? etc. Can you imagine someone as weird as Prince or Morrisey becoming famous on that level today? It would be impossible.

Theory: as the mono-culture shrunk (due to the internet) less interesting people became famous.

I mean, U2, Nirvana, Pavement........these are challenging bands....that level of rock-starness isn't available today and it sometimes kind of sucks. 15 years ago, this song would have been a huge hit and literally everyone you know would have known it and the band.

I guess I should hockey this up a bit to make it worth your while.......

Discussion points:

1. Why do Franson and Paranteau not have contracts?

2. Nolan Patrick should definitely be in the NHL.

3. Steve Yzerman - more overrated than Dave Grohl.

4. Used Book Stores - is there anything better?

5. Why does my keyboard switch to Canadian French every once in a while? The slash makes an accent on the E.......ééé

6. Is anything more amusing than people defending the Dan Giardi signing?

7. This song would never be a hit in any era, but it's still good.

Love you , Thanks for reading
