The Toronto Maple Leafs continued their dominant play on the road with a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday.

Auston Matthews provided all the offense that Toronto needed with his 23rd goal of the season. James van Riemsdyk, Roman Polak and Nikita Soshnikov also scored and Frederik Andersen made 26 saves for his second straight shutout.

The Leafs turnaround on the road has been remarkable and the main reason why they are currently in an Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Through the first two months of the season, Toronto’s record away from Air Canada Center was 2-6-4. Following a 3-0 loss to Calgary on November 30, the Leafs have gone 9-0-2 on the road, while their home record during that span is a mediocre 4-5-3.

A perturbed Red Wings fan who can’t handle his team losing 4-0 to the Maple Leafs on Wednesday.

The Leafs take on the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center in their final game before the four-day NHL All-Star break.

Backup Curtis McElhinney, who has not played since January 14, will get the start in goal for Toronto in spite of Andersen having a shutout streak of 121:11.

The Flyers have 54 points (one behind Toronto) and are playing in the second of back-to-back games on Thursday. Steve Mason made 34 saves in a 2-0 victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, but will sit in favor of Michal Neuvirth, who has an 8-4-1 career record against the Leafs.

Head coach Mike Babcock indicated after the win that defenseman Morgan Rielly would not be in the lineup against Philadelphia, missing his fourth game in a row.

“(Continuing to win) allows (Rielly) to get healthy instead of getting him back too soon and he’s not quite ready. He’ll be ready to go after the break.”
