In this edition of the hotstove we share our thoughts on Montreal's trade that sent Zack Kassian to Edmonton in exchange for Ben Scrivens,

Todd Cordell

I prefer Zack Kassian to Ben Scrivens.

When Kassian is healthy and his mind is right he is a pretty good player. In 115 games over the last couple years Kassian has scored 24 goals and added 45 points while bringing a physical presence to the game.

His rate scoring stats are pretty good and he's no slouch in the possession game, either.

He's definitely a wild card but if Kassian is on his game I think he is a more impactful player.

Matt Henderson

I'm tempted to say the Habs won unequivocally, but Scrivens hasn't been able to stop a puck in the NHL or AHL in over a year. I think both teams have equally lost this trade. Edmonton has added a cancer to their locker room and the Habs got a goalie who can't stop the puck.

James Tanner

The Habs don't really need Scrivens, as Condon has been fine. As many have pointed out, the Canadiens problems are not in net but being unable to score. I saw a chart where Price had at least two sets of seven games last year when he was as bad as Condon has been over the last seven.

So, they probably don't need a goalie, and if they did, Scrivens probably isn't the one they should get - but goalies being goalies he will probably go 39-2-1 the rest of the way and win the Vezina.

As for Kassian, I have a problem with the way people just rip his character like he's some idiot , when, no doubt, these holier than though types have never met him.

Maybe he is a jerk, but knowing the way people who cover the NHL feast over "lack of character" like vultures on a corpse, he's probably completely a totally fine guy. Maybe he's a total idiot, I don't know, but I don't judge guys I never met though third-hand reports, or their on ice actions (you have to play this game on the edge if you're a certain kind of player and I think it's hypocritical the way we turn on guys when they go too far).

As for being an addict, that is separate and has nothing to do with his "character" - exactly zero percent of the people I've ever met with "good character" are tea-toddlers. Just the opposite, usually. Lots of addicts have good character.

My experience is that the kind of person who thinks a person's addictions are a reflection of their character is ten times worse than the guy their judging.

It's a sickness and not for us to judge. If the Oilers are willing to help this kid get back on track (he's 24 and just a baby) then they have potentially a hell of a player.

So, given Scrivens uselessness and subpar AHL game and the fact the Canadiens don't even need him, I say Edmonton won this trade with a bold move that carries no risk and a potentially high reward.

Jason Lewis

Hard to say there is a "Winner" in that trade.

Montreal got an extremely unorthodox backup/third string goalie, while Edmonton got a talented project player with a bevy of off-ice issues who is now on his fourth organization in five years.

I'm not really sure there is one here.
