What Didn't Happen Yesterday. And Why.

So there was this that arrived this morning:

"Rough day yesterday. Great spin job by Stan about not forcing anything, but he was 'shut out' yesterday in his quest to move Sharp for a first round pick."

You win some, you lose some, and yesterday . . . after a string of fairly high profile successes including a third Stanley Cup for the organization in 6 years, Hawk GM Stan Bowman lost yesterday.

You can go with the positive spin, that there will still be deals to be made this summer, etc., but time is probably not Bowman's ally as he tries to shed salary for next season and get his own free agents signed. If rumors of a turned down offer for Sharp of two 2nd round picks and a top defense prospect (from Dallas) are true, then it's fair to say Bowman may have overplayed the Sharp hand. He might not get a better (or as good) offer, especially as the summer wears on and the new season looms. Every day that peels off the calendar hurts his bargaining position.

The same source told me the Hawks did get close with Montreal for their pick #26 overall, but the Habs' guy (WHL defenseman Noah Juulsen) was there and Marc Bergevin kept the pick to take him.

What can we expect today?

"Unfortunately, Hawks are not any closer right now to a trade... will have to look at acquiring multiple draft picks, picks for next year . . . wait to see how the market plays out."

"Hawks are patient, yes, but regardless of what comes out of the PR machine, yesterday 'stung'—as of now still talking with Florida, Boston, Montreal, and Toronto. Nothing imminent."

At 54th overall today, the Hawks took Niagara OHL, LW Graham Knott. With the last pick of round 3, they took defenseman Dennis Gilbert of the Chicago steel (USHL).

More as I have it.
