Domingue Wins First NHL Start in Coyotes' Best Story of the Season

Sure, yesterday's victory over the Montreal Canadiens isn't really a big deal - the team is eliminated from everything but the draft lottery - but it was still a nice day for the Coyotes and their fans.

Goalie Louis Domingue, making his NHL debut as a starting goalie, made 18 saves for the win.

Things began roughly as Domingue allowed two goals on the first five shots - both to up-and-coming superstar Alex Galchenyuk. However, that only makes it sweeter: he shut the Canadiens out for the rest of the game - some 55 minutes.

For Domingue, it must have been amazing to have his first NHL win come against his home-town Canadiens, as the Coyotes potential goalie-of-the-future is French Canadian.

Drafted in the fifth round of the 2010 draft, Domingue is 6'3" and has the distinction of catching with his right hand - an unusual thing for a goalie.

His scouting report lists him as large and athletic: so basically a generic goalie for his generation.
In his time in the Coyotes organization since being drafted he played mostly in the ECHL. Last year he was mostly the Pirates back-up and this season he has a .922/2.40 in 13 games.

Not stunning numbers, but at this point I think it's really about getting him a look in the Show to see how he does.

Along with Domingue, the Coyotes also have Mark Visintine, Mike McKenna, Mike Lee and Brendan Burke in the organization as possible replacements for Mike Smith, down the line.

Unsurprisingly - as most of their prospects are son's of former NHLers: Murphy, Domi, Perlini, Samualsson, MacInnis to name a few - Brendan Burke is the son of former Whaler and current Coyotes goalie coach Sean Burke and many people think he has the inside track on eventually succeeding Smith.

But, for now, in a season where feel-good-stories have been few and far between, the win in his debut vs his hometown team for goalie Louis Domingue is one of the nicest things to happen to the team all year.

Next up: Blue Jackets tomorrow.
