Amalie Benjamin covers the Bruins for the Boston Globe and she is reporting that Boston D Matt Bartkowski will NOT be facing a supplemental discipline hearing for his done shot on Sabres captain Brian Gionta.

Thanks @ThePeteBlackburn

It should come as no surprise that a Boston Bruins aggressor will not be held accountable for his dangerous, greasy actions. It was just 11 days ago that B's D-man Dennis Seidenberg decided to plaster the face of Hawks' captain Jonathon Toews against the end glass in Boston.

Seidenberg was assessed a boarding penalty for his ugly hit on Toews. After an NHL Department of Player Safety review of the incident, it was ruled that Seidenberg would not be held to a higher supplemental discipline standard.

Boston. Typical.

You better believe if Buffalo's Pat Kaleta or Chris Stewart attacked a Bruins player, or any other, in a similar manner, they would be facing league sanction and supplemental discipline.

Meanwhile, there is no update on the status and condition of Gionta who left the game bleeding from his face. The Sabres captain did not return to the game that the Sabres lost 4-3 in OT. They next play in Detroit on Tuesday night.

Marcus Foligno will be lost for a while according to Ted Nolan. The burly winger appeared to reinjure his shoulder when he fought Matt Bartlowski after the Bruins D head hunted Brian Gionta in the first period of the Bruins' 4-3 OT win over Buffalo on Sunday night.

Nolan said in his postgame presser that he is putting the kibosh on his scheduled practice in Detroit on Monday so that his sick and injured players can rest and recover from back to back games against the Avalanche and Bruins.

Lets take a head count of Buffalo's sick and injured players:

Gionta (upper body)
Foligno (upper body)
Myers (lower body)
Weber (lower body)
Strachan (injured)
Mitchell (injured)
Moulson (sick)
Kaleta (sick)
Neuvirth (sick)

One concludes that Nolan will be keeping Mikhail Grigorenko, Johan Larsson and Tim Schaller with the team for the Detroit game on Tuesday night.

Nolan will have to call up another forward from Rochester to replace Foligno. Perhaps he will call up newly acquired left winger Jerry D'Amigo whom the Sabres traded for last week. Tim Murray sent Luke Adam to Columbus for D'Amigo.

Sabres took a third period lead on Tim Schaller's first NHL goal, however, Dougoie Hamilton's second goal of the game tied it a 3s. Then Loui Eriksson won it in OT on a blow D zone coverage.

All that matters now is the health and well being of Sabres captain Brian Gionta.

Take the poll:

***

The Sabres announced that Gionta is injured and will not return to the game.

Foligno is done for the night as well with an unspecified injury. Did Marcus injure his shoulder in the fight?

Rule 48 Violaton Alert:

One of these days an NHL player is going to suffer a serious debilitating injury from all of the grimy, illegal head shots that occur on a nightly basis. How many times do we need to see NHLers suffer brain injuries as a result of blunt force trauma to the head?

Yes, NHL Department Of Player Safety concussions are brain injuries.

Case in point:

Sabres captain Brian Gionta was smashed in the head and was sent to the dressing room after Bruins D Matt Bartkowski was 10-minute misconduct at the 5:52 mark in the 1st period.

Bartkowski earned a pair of major penalties for fighting and interference. He was given a game misconduct.

Gionta was bleeding as he headed to the quiet room for observation.

Marcus Foligno wasted no time at all jumping Bartkowski. Foligno was given a 2-5-10.

Thanks @ThePeteBlackburn

Do me a favor and save your "tall guy hitting smaller guy" defense. It was a greasy, dangerous head hit.

In my opinion, Bartkowski deserves a 5 game suspension for targeting Gionta's head. The hit was late, it targeted the head and caused injury.

Gionta did not finish the first, nor has he been on the ice or on the bench in the second.
