Searching for Seven: Lightning in Chicago for Battle with Blackhawks

Looking to build on what has become a very successful six (!) game win streak, the Tampa Bay Lightning will take to the ice tonight in Chicago for a tilt with the always dangerous Blackhawks.

While it’s true that the Blackhawks have struggled in recent weeks, as evidenced by their 4-6-0 record in their last 10 games, the fact remains that this Chicago team is a dangerous one. Led by Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, the Blackhawks are a perennial contender. They are what the Lightning want to become.

It should also be noted that, even through this little rough patch, the Blackhawks have had no trouble showing up for games against top teams. Losses to Toronto, Winnipeg, and Washington this month are complemented by impressive wins over Montreal and San Jose. Do you think Joel Quenneville’s club is looking at Tampa like a Winnipeg or like a Montreal?

Uncharacteristically, the Blackhawks have had a difficult time scoring goals early in this 2014-15 campaign. They are scoring an average of 2.60 goals per game, which is down from the 3.18 they were scoring last year. That’s a significant dip in production. The Bolts, on the other hand, sit second in the league this year as they score at a 3.80 goals per game clip.

That potent Lightning offense will have a big challenge tonight, however, as the Blackhawks have simply been fantastic on the defensive side of things to start this year. They are allowing a league-leading/low 1.87 goals per game, thanks in large part to some stellar goaltending from Corey Crawford, Antti Raanta, and Scott Darling. All three Chicago goalies are sporting save percentages north of .930.

If recent history between these two clubs is any indication, fans in attendance at the United Center tonight are likely in for a hard-fought, close contest. Last year the Lightning went 2-0-0, but needed extra time in both cases to secure their victories. They were largely outplayed for long stretches in both games, but still found ways to win. They don’t ask how, only how many.

One last thing I’ll note before signing off is this – the Lightning don’t want November 11, 2014 to go down anything like November 11, 2013. Exactly one year ago today Steven Stamkos broke his leg in a game against the Boston Bruins. Here’s hoping the only thing he breaks tonight is some sort of scoring record.

As always, thanks for reading.
