For starters, I'd like to apologize to my readers for the lack of content over the past week or so. I am transitioning into a new role and opportunity which is exciting, but it comes with a lot of training, change, and long days. That said, I haven't had the energy at the end of the day to write anything for you - but I do not expect this to last.

I am in the process of working out a new writing schedule and finding the right balance. I do this on the side because I love to write and love the team(s) I write for, so this is not something I will simply drop because my life has been slightly altered ;). Thanks again to all my readers!

Sam Bennett may get the opportunity to make the type of impact which he has been hoping for. The Flames rookie is optimistic about his chance to impress the management and coaching staff as pre-season continues and opening day draws closer.

After suffering a groin injury in a game against the Canucks during the rookie tournament in Penticton, Bennett returned to action with the main squad in practice yesterday and says he feels just fine.

“I felt really good,” Bennett said. “I think I might have been gripping my stick a little too tight — you know, first time out with the main squad — but it was good to get out there for the first time. Just going to the game (Sunday at the Saddledome) and seeing the atmosphere there, it really made me want to play so badly. Sitting out, it sucks, but I’m happy I’m 100%.

And I can’t wait to play.”

Bennett will have an opportunity to showcase his skills at the NHL level as Mikael Backlund remains sidelined by an injury that might be worse than he originally thought. With Backlund likely slatted as the Flames first line center, this injury to the returning forward will provide the chance for others such as Bennett to get added ice time and, more importantly, a closer look.

When asked about Backlund’s status, coach Hartley responded with concern. “I don’t have any news to tell you, but I’m worried.” Backlund is officially listed as day-to-day with an abdominal strain but has now been off his blades for three consecutive days.

“I’d like to see him on the ice — that’s for sure.”

Don’t expect Bennett to lineup in the 1C spot in Backlund’s absence; that responsibility will likely fall squarely on the shoulders of Matt Stajan as coach Hartley has shown a tendency to shelter young players as they make the transition into the NHL. That said, don’t be surprised if Monahan isn’t given the chance to succeed in the role.

With the above in mind, look for Bennett to center the third line as he hopes to make a case to stay with the big squad. Unfortunately, the deck may be stacked against him as Markus Granlund, Corban Knight, Max Reinheart and others continue to battle for jobs as well.

While the odds may not be in Bennett’s favour, and I fully expect to see him sent back to Kingston by the end of his 9 game tryout, he doesn’t have to look very far to find inspiration. Sean Monahan made his case last year by playing his way onto the team, however I truly believe the scenario is a little different given Bennett’s age and overall level of strength - and no that’s not a jab at his pull ups…or lack thereof.

On that note, Bennett’s already overcome one hurdle as was evidenced by his performance at the Flames physical fitness testing.

“I guess if you’re wondering about the pull-ups, I did 11 pull-ups today,” Bennett said, answering the question from the media before it could even be asked last week. “It’s a little bit better than zero, so definitely a little progression on that.”

Bennett and the Flames will continue to practice and prepare for the season at the Saddledome today. Pre-season action resumes tomorrow as the Flames take on the Coyotes. Puck drop is at 5:00pm. Below are the expected line ups.
