First, let me just say that I really respect Bryan Trottier. Not only for the history he made with the NY Islanders, but also for the man he is. I have met him on a few occassions and spoken with him on and off the record. He is quiet, and honest and genuine. One conversation I had with him, quite a few years ago, was about Casey Cizikas.
I was concerned when the Islanders drafted Casey, but Trottier assured me of Casey's talent and his character. He was right. He's right about a lot of things.
It will be interesting to see if he is right about taking on another coaching job after all these years. He will be the assistant coach of the Buffalo Sabres alongside Ted Nolan. These two coaches are in their mid fifties and have a wealth of hockey knowledge and experience.
What they may not have is an abundance of energy. Perhaps Nolan's style of coaching has changed since his Islander days, but he wasn't exactly high-tech or very hands-on. It was a drastic change when Scott Gordon replaced Ted Nolan. Computers cluttered the coache's office where there had been only one that had dust before.
The quiet nature of both these men, who I read became friends while Nolan was on the Island and Trottier was working with the Isles, may not be the best combination to create a winning team. But, we'll see.
