Setoguchi Rumoured to be Arizona Bound/ Moss Re-signed

According to Eklund, the Coyotes are one of the teams interested in signing Devin Setoguchi.

Setoguchi, 27, played last year for the Jets and scored 11 goals and 27 points in 65 games. He seems a long way removed from the guy who scored 31 for the Sharks in 2008-09, although a look at his career stats shows that in every other year he has basically been worth 20 goals.

Setoguchi is a guy who can score and who has size. Although he hasn't come close to 65 points again (and I believe that was playing with Thornton) he is still fairly young and has been beset by injuries. I think that on a try-out basis, or a cheap contract, he is the kind of guy that teams like Arizona (i.e spending conscience teams) have to take chances on, since there is always a chance that he recovers his former glory.

If the cost is cheap enough, I think it's a good sign. My only problem is that it would further clog up the wings and lesson the chances of young players like Samuelson and Domi making the team. I do, however, think that if the Coyotes are willing to give him a chance without guaranteeing him a job, that it's a worthwhile gamble.

The Coyotes should come to camp, potentially anyways, with Doan, Erat, Boedker, Korpikoski, Klinkhammer, Crombeen, Chipchura along with the as-of-yet-and-may-not-be signed Bissonnette and MacMillan, and the aforementioned Domi (a C who many feel will play W, at least at first) and Samuelson all vying for jobs on wing. Add in Setaguchi and you have 12 guys for 8/9 spots.

This isn't a bad problem to have, since it creates competition and means there are guys to cover injuries, but none of these guys, with the exception of Boedker, are likely ready to be quality first line players, at least in the case of Domi and Samuelson, not next year.

Still, if Setoguchi comes cheap and they aren't willing to promise him anything, I think its a good value move.

Yesterday, the Coyotes announced that they re-signed David Moss to a one year 800 K deal. Moss put up a decent 8 goals and 22 points last year, playing in all but two games. He's under appreciated - he can kill penalties, has a little offensive talent and he is huge. As good a guy for your fourth line as you can get, since he can easily move up in the lineup if he has to. Glad they brought him back, didn't think they were gonna.
