On the Signing of Martin Havlat

One move Lou Lamoriello made on July 1 that is sort of flying under the radar is signing Martin Havlat.

While he has a history of injuries and has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career, he has proven to be effective when in the lineup.

For an offensive starved team like New Jersey, taking a chance on a guy like Havlat cheap for one year could pay dividends. If he misses some time and produces when he's in the lineup, he'll be worth the $1.5 million. If playing with his best friend and Czech National teammate Patrik Elias can help him play at a high level and he's able to stay healthy, the $1.5 million won't come close to matching his worth.

Despite coming in and out of the lineup last year due to injuries, Havlat scored 12 goals and had a plus-6 penalty differential in 48 games played. His shooting percentage was a little high, but he's a scorer and typically percentages tend to vary more the smaller the sample size.

His ability to produce at even strength - something Mike Cammalleri did at an elite rate last year - will be a huge help to one of the lowest scoring teams in hockey that struggled mightily to fill the net at evens.

As you can see, Havlat's production rate would have slotted him 2nd on the Devils last year. He'll play with Patrik Elias - and possibly Adam Henrique as well - in a scoring role next season so he will certainly have every opportunity to match that production.

If he does, he'll be well worth the gamble.
