SATURDAY QUICK HITS
* The Flyers own the following picks in next weekend's NHL Draft:
Round 1: 17th overall pick
Round 2: 48th overall pick
Round 3: 86th overall pick (acquired from Boston in the Andrej Meszaros trade)
Round 4: None
Round 5: 138th overall
Round 6: 168th overall
Round 7: 198th overall
Note: The Flyers would acquire Boston's second-round pick (56th overall) instead the third-round pick if the Bruins re-sign impending unrestricted free agent Meszaros to a new contract prior to the Draft. This possibility appears unlikely.
* Today in Flyers History: On June 21, 2002, the Flyers traded forward Ruslan Fedotenko and a pair of previously acquired 2002 second-round picks the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for the fourth overall pick of the 2002 Draft. Philadelphia coveted Rick Nash (who went first overall to Columbus) and Jay Bouwmeester (who went third overall to Florida). With those players and goaltender Kari Lehtonen taken in the top three picks, the Flyers selected Kärpät Oulu defenseman Joni Pitkänen with the fourth overall pick.
* Longtime Flyers pressbox steward Gene Prince will be retiring after 32 years on the job. Gene will be missed by the local and out-of-town media alike. Friendly, helpful, gregarious and passionate about hockey (and the Flyers in particular), Gene has always been very accommodating to our needs. My favorite story that Gene tells is one in which he helped former Flyers goaltender-turned-broadcast Bobby Taylor out with a flat tire in blizzard-like conditions. Gene will be moving to South Carolina, where his new house is being built. All the best, Gene!
