Kyle Okposo: USA Olympian NOT 'Nigerian Prince'

The game was especially boring last night, as most Islander vs Devils games are. But without John Tavares in the line-up it was even more boring. One fight and three total goals with the Isles on the short end of the stick -- again.

But enough about the losing streak. You can read that up and down the net and in the papers. It's basically 'OLD NEWS.' What bothered me most of all last night was MSG's Peter Ruttgaizer calling Kyle Okposo 'the Nigerian Prince.'

WHAT THE???? Have I been away from hockey for that long that I didn't know this was his new nickname? No. That can't be. Why in heaven's name would you call the kid from Minnesota, who is looking for a Team USA roster spot a "Nigerian Prince"? Yes, his dad is Nigerian, however this has never come up before or at least not in the six years I have been around the team.

It was bad when he said it the first time, but then he said it again. While it would be really awesome if Kyle was Nigerian Royalty, I think in this day and age of spam emails a title such as that has more negative connotation than positive. Ruttgaizer has made many agitating comments, but that one seemed to be the dumbest. I think it was worse than him calling the Isles "The Rangers" early in the broadcast. A mistake he QUICKLY apologized for.

Jiggs McDonald will be in Howie Rose's spot tonight and he has been a lucky charm for the Isles before. Tavares will be back in, but Michael Grabner and Josh Bailey will both be missing. I can't help but wonder if after last night's game, John Tavares is returning a tad early from whatever it is that bothered him. He has the type of loyalty and work ethic that would make that a possibility.

Art Staple of Newsday gave the Isles an "F" for their midseason report card. The Rangers got a "C-". This was accurate reporting with Staple penning the best closing line I have read.

Isles vs the Wild at 8 pm. If we care.
