The Calgary Flames have placed goaltender Joey MacDonald on waivers today, despite providing some steady backup worthy performances.

While some feel the reasoning is due to a lack of play from the veteran netminder, in actuality it is because the club wants to call up Reto Berra from the Abbotsford Heat who has been playing quite well. Just as the coach and GM have said, they will provide ice time to anyone who is playing well and Berra is getting his chance to play at the NHL level.

“Part of the plan right from Day 1 was to find out what our two goalies could do, especially at the NHL level,” explained Hartley.

“With Berra having a pretty good start at the AHL level with Abbotsford, we felt like we had debated for a while what would be the right timing, and obviously part of bringing Reto Berra was to get Joey MacDonald down, and the only way to get this done was by putting him through waivers.”

Placing MacDonald on waivers is quite risky indeed with a few teams in the need of a second option for their own roster. Teams of possible interest, according to Elliot Friedman would be the Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes, and Nashville Predators.

The Flames believe that with Berra, they could still have two strong options for the future as he and Karri Ramo will likely continue to battle for the starting position.

“I think he has unbelievable quick legs, but it’s going to be a new challenge for him,” Hartley said. “He came from Switzerland to play in the National Hockey League, so we’ll get him some starts in the very near future.”

That’s all for today folks, thanks for reading!
