Missed Opportunities & Concussion

I watched the game like many other fans do; standing at a bar with the sound off fighting other patrons who want to change the channel to football. The other Islanders fans who were watching with me were equally dismayed watching the first period. There was a collective gasp when Lubomir Visnovsky was helped off the ice after taking a shot to the head. Announced he would not be returning to the ice due to concussion, it was a bad sign. By the time the Canes had a three goal league, I had to allow the other patrons to at least take a peek at the Notre Dam game on another channel.

It was an unfortunate injury that left Matt Carkner, whom I was already dismayed at being in the line-up over Donovan, playing way more minutes than he should have but not nearly as many as Andrew MacDonald had to.

When Carkner went into Nabkov’s net like a bowling ball and sent him and the net crashing into the dashers, there was another collective gasp from the patrons that were gathered by the TV. Nabby lay motionless on the ice. He looked like he was unconscious. Some how, he stayed in net. Personally, I think Poulin should have taken over. Not that Nabby cost the Islanders the game, but just as a precaution.

Once again, Matt Moulson began the game on the third line. I hated it. But once returned to a line with John Tavares during a power play opportunity, Moulson scored. As a matter of fact, Moulson had a three point night with a goal and two assists.

Kyle Okposo had a two point night, one goal, one assist and won both face-offs he was tasked with. Casey Cizikas won seven of nine. He really has become a specialist.

John Tavares is continuing his point a game run, with one assist point last night. But he is not even thinking about that. He’s thinking about the team, and how they just aren’t playing well enough. This is a brief interview, but it tells the full story of why John Tavares IS the Captain, as well as the heart and soul of this team:

Charity event today at Adventure Land this morning. The entire team will have some fun with fans and get a little time away from the rink. But come Monday -- back to work.
