For the second time in the 2013 preseason, the Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues found themselves tied at the end of regulation after the Stars were unable to close out a game they led in the third period. In the opener in Dallas last Sunday, the Blues won in a shootout. Last night in St. Louis, the Blues won 3-2 in a penalty-laden overtime decision.

Alex Chiasson (power play) and Jamie Benn tallied for the Stars, while Jaden Schwartz and Alex Pietrangelo (power play) answered for St. Louis. Patrik Berglun notched the game-winner for the Blues on an overtime power play goal.

Kari Lehtonen went the distance in goal for the Stars, stopping 33 of 36 shots. Winning goalie Jake Allen turned back 22 of 24 shots for St. Louis.

After a scoreless first period, the Stars forged a 1-0 lead at the 5:29 mark of the middle stanza. With Dallas on the power play, Chiasson tipped home a Gonchar point shot. Tyler Seguin earned the secondary assist. Schwartz knotted the game at 1-1 nearly three minutes later.

The game remained tied until the opening shift of the third period, when Jamie Benn converted a setup by Seguin at the nine-second mark. The lead held until there was less than five minutes left in the third period, when Pietrangelo ripped a shot home. Former Stars forward Derek Roy earned the primary assist.

The Blues spent most of overtime on the power play, as Benn was sent off for holding Schwartz at the 13-second mark. With St. Louis on a 4-on-3 advantage, Berglund backhanded the puck into the net to end the game at the 2:07 mark. Pietrangelo and Jordan Leopold were credited with the assists.

Dallas made use of much its projected regular lineup in this game, including forwards Tyler Seguin (two assists, 17:44 TOI), Jamie Benn, Erik Cole, Ray Whitney, Chiasson, Shawn Horcoff, Antoine Roussel, Vernon Fiddler, and Ryan Garbutt. With a lot of special teams play in the match, the fourth line forward unit of Colton Sceviour, Chris Mueller and Lane MacDermid played sparingly as the game progressed.

The Stars also used much of its projected starting defense corps, minus Trevor Daley (upper-body injury). Sergei Gonchar led all Dallas skaters with 25:32 of ice time. Stephane Robidas, Brenden Dillon, Jordie Benn, Jamie Oleksiak and Kevin Connauton rounded out the blueline in this game.

Next up for the Stars on their preseason slate is a road game against Colorado on Tuesday. Game time is 8 p.m. CDT. After that, the two clubs will rematch in Dallas on Thursday. The Stars will conclude the exhibition schedule with a game in Oklahoma City against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday. The puck drops on the regular season on Oct. 3.
