Dale Lamontagne: Thoughts on Kadri Signing

It looked like Nazem Kadri wouldn't be attending the Toronto Maple Leafs training camp at all Wednesday, but that changed Tuesday evening.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Nazem Kadri finally came to terms on a new two-year deal, worth $5.9 million Tuesday night, ending the ongoing contract talks between the RFA and the team.

The Maple Leafs and Kadri, 22, began negotiations far apart, as Kadri’s camp wanted a longer contract, while Leafs general manager Dave Nonis wanted a more reasonable ‘’bridge’’ contract.

‘’Happy to be with the Leafs for the next couple years, looking forward to camp’’ Kadri said via Twitter after the deal was announced.

The London, Ontario native was one of the best offensive forwards this past season for the Blue and White, as he put up 18 goals and 44 points in 48 games.

I really like the money and term for this deal, I think it's fair for both parties and giving that it's a ''bridge contract'', Kadri will be able to prove himself and show that he's worth big money over the next two seasons.

Kadri is expected to fill as the second line centre, probably between Joffrey Lupul and newcomer, David Clarkson.

With the deal, the Maple Leafs only have one RFA left to sign and that’s defenseman Cody Franson. Franson still remains without a contract, and he isn't expected to participate in the Leafs training camp this week.

GM Dave Nonis must continue to focus on Franson, try and get some sort of deal done. But, with the Leafs tight in cap-space with $1,995,833 million, it could be tricky.
