News broke yesterday, in a story written by the Vancouver Province’s Ed Willes, that an extension for the twins was close.

In the one bit of news, Aquilini said the Sedin twins are close to signing contract extensions and doesn’t believe there any impediments to a new deal.

“They’re Canucks,” Aquilini said. “They’re what we want this team to be about.”

I’d call that a bit of news I guess, but then again, it’s not like every Canucks fans didn’t know a new deal was coming.

The Sedins like Vancouver and Vancouver likes the Sedins. When you have a situation like that, as Mike Gillis has said in the past, “deals get done”.

In fact, I’m not actually sure there is a Canucks fan out there that could picture the twins anywhere else. Vancouver is their home and it will be their home until the Sedins decide other wise.

So the real question isn’t if a deal will get done. No, the real questions now are how much and how long?

Points per game (combined)

12/13- 0.89 (85pts)
11/12- 0.96 (148pts)
10/11- 1.21 (198pts)
09/10- 1.36 (197pts)

So, you can see, the Twins are on the decline, but they are still all-star type players, even at the age of 33. My best guess is that they will rack up somewhere around 70 points each.

If you pro-rate 65-70 points last season, you end up being somewhere around 37-41 points – depending on games.

Comparable Salaries (cap)

Joe Thornton 7,000,000
Max Pacioretty 4,500,000
James Neal 5,000,000
Logan Couture 6,000,0000 (extension)
Zach Parise 7,538,462
Sam Gagner 4,800,000
Jiri Tlusty 1,600,000
Pascal Dupuis 3,750,000
Jordan Eberle 6,000,000
Mikko Koivu 6,750,000
Blake Wheeler 5,600,000

Avg- 5,321,678

That 5,321,678 is a tad low in my opinion given how much they have done for the team and the city. As well, I think you need to calculate in that they are UFAs and will have a number of options.

I think a three-year deal for 17.25 million – a 5.75 million cap hit – is a deal that works for everyone.

Yr 1- 7,000,000
Yr 2- 6,000,000
Yr 3- 4,250,000

What is your offer to re-sign the twins?

What is you offer next summer if they are UFAs?

Until tomorrow my friends, stay classy

Ian
