When Ilya Kovalchuk decided to retire from the NHL and return to Russia it opened the door for discussion about other Russian stars doing the same. Naturally Evgeni Malkin's name came up in that discussion.
Malkin in an interview with R-Sport in Russia squashed any potential of him returning to play in the KHL full time:
“A lot can happen, but as long as I feel comfortable in America I might as well leave well enough alone. I’ve won a Stanley Cup with the Penguins, I’ve got individual awards, I get a lot of playing time, I have an excellent relationship with my teammates and coaches."
“Why would I look for something else? I have everything, [The NHL is] my priority.”
On Ilya Kovalchuk 's decision to go back to the KHL:
“Ilya’s chosen this path, and I’ve got no right to judge him. They’re saying that this will become a trend, but it’s really an exception to the rule."
Malkin signed an 8 year 76M extension earlier this summer with the Penguins that is set to kick in after the 2013-2014 season.
Malkin's actions and words continue to express an aliegience to the Penguins and the NHL.
