7/9 1:24 pm: It was just announced that Cal Clutterbuck has agreed to terms on a FOUR-YEAR, $11 mill deal with the Islanders. I DID NOT see that coming. Cal is only 25-years-old.

I actually was beginning to think that Clutterbuck was more of a bargaining chip down the road. Maybe he still is. Maybe they really want to keep him. But... Wow.

Uh, Hey, MattyMarts how you feel about this?

PS: According to Newsday's Art Staple, the Islanders are now above the cap floor with both Josh Bailey and Thomas Hickey still yet to be signed. (No creative accounting come September)

7/8 10 pm: It is probably no surprise to anyone that today Kevin Poulin accepted his qualifying offer from the Islanders. It is a two way agreement, but in order for Kevin to play in Bridgeport, he would have to clear waivers.

Now, whether this is a calculated risk or not is another question. Is Garth Snow 100% sure that Poulin will be his Isles back-up to Nabokov? Is it Anders Nilsson who will get the job out of training camp in September? Will the Isles find a qualified NHL goalie on the open market come August when things shake out as teams scramble to be cap compliant? Who knows. I don't.

But Anders Nilsson will be in the Orange vs Blue Scrimmage as he is at the mini-camp this week along with fellow Sound Tiger goalie Ken Reiter. Ken is the oldest attendee of the camp at all of 26. Also sharing the nets this week are Eamon McAdam this year's 3rd rounder and Joel Rumpel from Wisconsin WCHA.

Nilsson will NOT be the tallest man in camp. Defenseman Troy Donnay from Flint MI holds that distinction at 6'7" tall. Taylor Cammarata will be the shortest, listed at 5'7", however he also has the most goals at 38.

As usual, the Isles have rounded out the mini-camp with some local color. There are five young men from Long Island who will be playing along side some of the Isles' best future players.

There are 22 players from the USA and four from Sweden. Canada will be well represented by 19 players. There is one Defenseman from the Netherlands and two players from Moscow. Both you know quite well.

Intersting that Joe Diamond, from Long Beach, NY has the most PIMs this season at 147 followed closely by Andrey Pedan who has 145.

I am going to try to get there tomorrow to see at least a little of the on ice work.
