Lecavalier Bought Out, Should Rangers Sign Him?

I wasn't going to write a separate blog on this, but as we all wait to see what the Rangers do with Brad Richards, this has become topic du jour for several teams including the Blueshirts.

Here is my take:

1) To buy out Richards expecting to Vinny is short-sighted and foolish as no guarantee he comes to NY, especially with Torts gone. Granted he may have a connection with AV, but several teams, including the early favoite in Montreal, along possibly with Vancouver, Detroit, Toronto and a host of others will be in the mix.

2) Like Vinny, but can't tie up $5 mil in salary for him, given who you have to re-sign, also factoring in #1 above. That said, there are some rumors coming out he may only command in the $3-4 mil range, but you would have to definitively walk away from Clowe and buy out Richards to make this work given the RFAs to be re-signed and salary expectations there.

3) He is not a winger, as he fits as a second line center, so that would mean Brassard or Stepan would have to move to wing or one of them act as a third line center and Miller move to wing, as Boyle should be the 4th line center.

4) All that said, getting him sounds great, in theory, unsure practically it would work even though I think he has a lot more left in the tank than Richards shown by his production last year.

What do you think?
