HERE as silly season ramps up.
It's a solid move for the Leafs to acquire Jonathan Bernier as it gives the Toronto club significant depth in goal and possible 1a-1b tandem much like St. Louis from 2011-12 and in some cases Chicago this year.
While it may not be to
James Reimer's liking as he seems to have proven that he can play at the NHL level with a respectable stat line as shown below:
ES SAVE %: .924 PP SAVE %: .920 SH SAVE %: .923
So what of the Jets? Well the cost was a 2nd round pick- something they have 3 of this year. A forward who does not have particularly great possession numbers- at least according to
David Johnson and
Ben Scrivens.
His comparables to Reimer are as follows:
ES SAVE %: .920 PP SAVE %: .872 SH SAVE %: 1.000
It's not a lot but once again it illustrates just where the Jets are with their depth. Do they have a forward or defenseman they can spare? One could argue Byfuglien, he of many trade rumours and conjecture, but that would be gross overpayment. Could Frattin have been switched out and say RFA Alex Burmistrov thrown in along with the rights to Montoya?
While some would argue that is less than what Toronto offered that's not the point. The bigger issue is if the Leafs, a team that made the post season with their goal tending duo. A team that took the Stanley Cup finalist Boston Bruins to seven games and 12 minutes from upset can see a need for goal-tending improvement- do the Jets?
Maybe they do because this is what
Ondrej Pavelec's numbers look like with his 2012-13 comparable stat line below:
ES SAVE %: .914 PP SAVE %: .844 SH SAVE %: .920
Oh yeah you can look at
Bernier here and below
ES SAVE %: .932 PP SAVE %: .868 SH SAVE %: 1.000
Right now we do not know what Kevin Chevaldayoff is doing behind the scenes. However, when the details of moves by former conference rivals are made and the strategic view of said rivals scrutinized, Jets fans should hope Chevy is at least trying to get in the game on deals such as this.
That will be tough though because when you look at the contracts of the 4 goalies listed above, one of them really stands out. You hit a contract comparable list like
THIS and once again one of these is not like the other.
Pavelec 3.9 million
Bernier 1.25 million (expiring deal)
Scrivens 612,000
Reimer 1.8 million
The contract signed nearly a year ago between the Jets and Pavelec is starting to look like an arranged marriage with the Jets providing a very big dowry. Times have changed though and this year and next there is no shame in admitting you made a mistake. More importantly that matrimonial
mistake will be far less costly that it used to be.
Are Chevy and the Jets prepared to cut ties if it's another rocky relationship year with the player between the pipes?
