Mock Draft! Mock Draft! Mock Draft! (The Hype Williams Blog)

Coming soon to a Hockeybuzz Hotstove near you will be a mock draft. So far, Travis Yost and I are in. It would be fun if we had, oh, six bloggers involved. That way each blogger could be assigned all the teams in one division. I would love to be able to pick for the Flames at #6 and the Oilers at #7. There's be no Mark Jankowski involved, I assure you.

I threw the invite over to Ty Anderson to participate, but it was late last night when he responded. He mumbled something about Bruins win, drafts are for bad teams, and that I'm some sort of peasant. He was probably intoxicated when he said it, and who can blame him? The Bruins are going home for the next two games with a stranglehold in a series few people gave them a chance to win.

Any interested bloggers can contact me to participate. Six would be ideal, but three is workable. We could hold the draft in "real time" and then submit a comment on each player we've taken, with the whole mess being sent to the Hockeybuzz Hotstove as a posting. Come on people, smile on your brother, we've got to draft one another right now.

In Other News...

- I keep hearing Ryan Miller to the Oilers rumors, but I wish people would stop talking. The Sabres are going to want so much for this guy, and he's only got a season left on his deal. He also has an NTC where he can name eight teams he won't go to. You think the Oilers might be on that list? Perhaps. Let this one go, people.

- I keep hearing Luongo to the Islanders for Rick Dipietro, who will be bought out immediately by the Canucks. So to answer the question if Luongo has a trade value...

- Speaking of the Islanders, Mark Streit has refused their final contract offer, and will go UFA in July. The Oilers are going to be on the top of his list, as everybody loves Ralph Krueger. $5mil per for the next three seasons would do it.

- Between Streit, Belov, Petry and Justin Schultz, and Oilers would have a tremendously mobile defense. Ladislav Smid and Nick Schultz would give the Oilers a couple sturdy guys. With this scenario, I'd rather seen Oscar Klefbom playing in the AHL for a season than being the #7 guy on the Oilers, only seeing partial action. He's a kid and a year in the minors wouldn't kill him.

- As much as I think Craig Button has Corn Flakes between his ears, today he posted his final draft ratings on the TSN website, and he's got the right six guys in the top six...not that draft order I think is correct, but it's the right six: Jones, Drouin, MacKinnon, Barkov, Nishushkin and Monahan are on his list. Correct.

- Which is bad news for the Oilers. If the top six are that obvious to Button, there's no way any of those guys are making it to the Oilers 7th overall pick. My advice is to deal down and try to get two firsts. None of the other options in the draft will be able to help the Oilers immediately this upcoming season, so we're talking about player development any way you slice it.

- I keep hearing a stack of goalie names as to whom the Oilers might go pick up. Mike Smith? No. Evgeni Nabokov? Perhaps, but likely no. Nick Backstrom? I wish. He's staying in Minnie. Jonathan Bernier? Sorry, not interested. Hiller? The Ducks are likely asking too much for him.

How this is going to turn out is, the Oilers are going to re-sign Yann Danis, because every other option will be overpriced. There's no reason to overpay someone now if there's still a strong chance Devan Dubnyk is the long-term starter here.
