Who Do You Want As Coach? Callahan/Hagelin - Shoulder Surgeries

I will get a detailed, nuanced look at the various coaching possibilities, hopefully including some candidates not yet mentioned, but wanted to get a quick blog up to start/continue the conversation that has been going on in the prior blog. In addition, I will have some final, well we will see about that, thoughts on John Tortorella and the circumstances surrounding his dismissal within that same blog.

For this blog, I want to make it very simple and ask two questions, each one related to the other.

1. In a perfect world, who would you want the Rangers coach to be?

2. What style of play should the Rangers play and based on your answer to #1, does that differ from how you answer this question? In addition, if your answer to #1 does not jibe with #2, what modifications would your answer to #1 make, or what pieces must that coach incorporate so that 1 and 2 do coincide.

On the face of it, simple questions. In fact, not so easy as your answer for 1 may not be the case for how you answer #2 and vice versa. I have my own thoughts, which I will share in the next blog.

Your mission has been laid out, I can't wait to see the reponses.

(In other news, (thanks Pete and Jimbo for posting).

Carl Hagelin and Ryan Callahan underwent surgery to repair torn labrums in their left shoulders. Callahan missed time earlier in the season with a shoulder injury. Interesting that both had injuries. In terms of Callahan, not a surprise, as many felt he was limited in both rounds and might have been playing hurt. For Hagelin, he did not show any signs of it and makes his play in the playoffs even more impressive, despite his so-so production.

The Timetable on Hagelin/Callahan recoveries is 4-5 months. So that would mean no training camp, possibly miss start of regular season. Even if back on time, the question will be how long it will take them to have full strength and motion in each. This was similar to the surgery that Marian Gaborik underwent and there were questions as to how healthy he was this season, even with the late start.

In addition, Hagelin needs to be signed to new deal, though I doubt that this injury should have a material impact on those negotiations.

The Rangers agreed to terms with defenseman Samuel Noreau, the team's 5th round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft. They will let Peter Ceresnak and Shane McClogan go back into draft. Contract limit along with view as to their progress, or lack thereof, and depth in the organization drove these decisions.)
