Tomas Vokoun very well could be the MVP of the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs – at least thus far.
Vokoun saved the Penguins’ bacon in Round 1, winning the fifth game in a series tied at two games apiece. He hasn’t looked back. While some observers believe Marc-Andre Fleury needs to play again for the Pens to win the Cup, Vokoun is making it difficult for coach Bylsma to push him out of the net.
How well has Vokoun played?
Let’s take a look at his
numbers.
First off, the 36-year-old – who has more wins in the 2013 playoffs (4) than he had in his entire NHL career (3) – leads all playoff goalies who have appeared in more than two games with a .949 save percentage.
Vokoun’s 1.61 goals-against average ranks second, just behind the Kings’ Jonathan Quick’s 1.60 GAA.
The Penguins netminder fares similarly well in
special teams situations.
Vokoun ranks third with a .952 save percentage at even strength, behind only Quick (.958) and Craig Anderson (.953).
He’s allowed only one power-play goal, stopping 20-of-21 shots, giving him .952 save percentage. Only Corey Crawford (1.000) and Braden Holtby (.955) have done better.
Vokoun’s lone weakness comes with short-handed shots against, where he’s surrendered one goal on seven shots for an .857 save percentage.
