Nabokov vs. The Media

So the one interview that stuck out in my mind from Tuesday was when Nabokov was thrown against the wall and interrogated. That's what it felt like to me standing to his left behind the first line of those in the Hockey Inquisition. The microphones were in tight to hear the often very soft spoken Nabokov. He had little room to move. That is what I saw. Until tonight.

In reviewing the ITV segment above, not only doesn't it 'look' that bad for him, but it also doesn't 'sound' that bad. But I can tell you, when Nabby was asked if he wanted to come back and what he liked about the organization, he sounded more than tired of answering the question -- AGAIN.

To me, he sounded like he really didn't want to have to deal with this group if they weren't going to ask anything meaningful or new. But when you hear the portion ITV has posted, the sentence "You wouldn't believe me anyway." doesn't sound as pointed as it did in person.

"The Professor" as he is called by the media, always claims he doesn't 'think' too much. I think he lies. He is well spoken and very intelligent. He is thoughtful in his answers, especially the tough questions which relate to the loses equating to 'failure.' He intrigues me, but he also scares the crap out of me.

I thought I wanted to ask him if he studied the Penguins shooters before the games, but I thought better of it.

When asked if he would be back, he answered properly "I tihnk you're asking the wrong person."

Every player there was well schooled in answering that who stays and who goes is the decision of only one man. They also expressed the understanding that there will be those who will not return next season and it's just part of the business. Nothing personal. Just business.

For Professor Nabokov, I think the part of the business he would like to have dissapear is -- those with microphones and cameras. With the exception perhaps of Mr. Fischler.
